In the 19th century, when people were talking about and making guesses about why the Templars were killed, the name “Baphomet” started to be used by the general public. Modern scholars agree that the name “Baphomet” was an Old French version of the name “Mohammed.” It is thought that some Templars, because of their long military occupation of the Outremer, had started to incorporate Islamic ideas into their beliefs, which the Inquisitors saw as heresy and wrote down.
